A135: TAKING THE LEAP. Longment, CO, April 24, 2009. Pema Chödrön teaches on leaping into your fear as a spiritual warrior – with courage, sanity, and tender-hearted bravery. Being willing to touch that tenderness through the practice of meditation and in everyday life is a main practice. The journey of becoming intimate with fear is the heart of developing fearlessness. Leaning into fear or smiling at fear is the vanguard of courage, remembering our interdependence with all beings. Three qualities in the Shambhala teachings are presented for nurturing the heart of the warrior: lovingkindness, doubtlessness, and joy. Doubtlessness means to let the world wake you up through the ups and downs of life. 1 CD $12.00. DVD available soon.

A136: MONASTICISM IN THE 21ST CENTURY: Supporting Wakefulness, Fearlessness, and Gentleness. Halifax, NS, May 1, 2009. A brief history of Gampo Abbey. Pema Chödrön discusses dharma at Gampo Abbey: ordinary people bringing their lives to the path. Wakefulness means to stay open to everything, even the experience of closing down and entrapment. Habitual patterns are like a pacing tiger in the great outdoors. Being open to and knowing the nature of fear gives birth to fearlessness. At Gampo Abbey, the education of the warrior, the brave practitioner, involves deep training with everyday monastic routine. 1 CD $12.00
(also available is a 2nd CD with the last 2 questions and answers from the talk and a fundraiser talk for Gampo Abbey by the director, Les St. Marie. Purchase both CDs together for $14.50)

New from the Archives - A201: BODHICITTA, MAITRI, AND EQUANIMITY: Leaving Home and Growing Up. These teachings, from the second "Leaving Home" program, were given to young adults at Gampo Abbey in the summer of 1998. In this month long practice intensive, the participants received temporary monastic ordination and observed monastic practices such as sojong, the twice monthly confession. These are a few of the talks given by Ani Pema Chödrön that have unique qualities relative to the longer teachings given by her the previous year to the first "leaving home" group. The questions and answer sections with this brilliant group of young adults are also excellent. 3 talks on 5 audio CDs $41.00 or 1 MP3 CD $24.00.
Talk 1: Leaving Home and Growing Up. Topics discussed in this short and potent introductory talk include the power and practice of aspiration, arousing bodhicitta, dedicating the merit, and the three stages of temporary (lay) ordination. Also discussed: the 4 "Rs" of confession which bring courage and flexibility: recognition, regret, refuge, and remedial action (1 CD $12).
Talk 2: Equanimity-Tonglen. This talk is an excellent overview of the four limitless qualities (love, compassion, joy, and equanimity) with particular emphasis on equanimity, which is presented as the basis for the other three. Included is a practice for awareness of the "three poisons" in everyday life and a simple version of the tonglen practice as a way of relating to equanimity (2 CDs $14.50).
Talk 3: Maitri Practice. Further in-depth discussion of equamity practice which moves into a discussion of limitless maitri/loving-kindness. Short excellent review of Theravada and Zen approaches to Maitri practice. Includes short 7-step maitri practice, with discussion (2 CDs $14.50).

A134: TURNING TOWARD ENLIGHTENMENT: THE THREE VOWS. Gampo Abbey Yarne retreat, January-February 2009. The three vows are three levels of commitment for working with groundlessness. The foundation is the vow of individual liberation, the pratimoksha vow. Keeping precepts is a practice of not acting or speaking out of confused energy. Such refraining is used as a way to connect with the underlying energy of life, not acting out and not repressing. The bodhisattva vow to benefit others, as well as oneself, builds on this. “Start where you are” and dedicate your life to keeping open to every one and every situation. The tantric samaya vow fully embraces groundlessness and inquisitiveness, without bias. Your life is the biggest koan. These talks take you though the interconnectedness of the 3 vows and inspire one to further embrace groundlessness.
6 talks plus shamatha and tonglen instruction by Pema Chodron. 10 CDs $72.50 or 1 MP3 CD $43.50. Individual talks are available for $14.50 ea. (2 CDs each, talks 5 and 6 are together).
Talk 1: Unmasking Fixed Identity. Overview of the 3 vows. Coming to terms with the fundamental ambiguity of being human. Learning to abide in groundlessness by working with the 1-1/2 minute emotion practice.
Talk 2: Individual Liberation: Pratimoksha and Renunciation. The pratimoksha vow is the practice of refraining without repressing. It works at the most simple level of body and speech and opens the doorway to enlightenment.
Talk 3: Evolving Beyond Fear and Survival. Embracing the entire experience beyond success or failure. The 8 worldly dharmas describe how we function conventionally, the cycle of hope and fear that traps us. The pratimoksha is the foundation for developing spiritual confidence. Includes shamatha instruction.
Talk 4: Stepping Further into Groundlessness: The Bodhisattva Vow. Connecting deeply with bodhicitta – the path of heroes and heroines. Leaping right into the pain of the world. Includes tonglen instruction.
Talk 5: Samaya of Body, Speech, and Mind. The full embracing of groundlessness. Everything as the manifestation of enlightened energy. Seeing, touching, feeling the mandala of our life. Includes talk on taking the bodhisattva vow.
Talk 6: Cultivating Flexibility. The path is a process of unmasking and opening. Flexibility is essential. Cultivating wakefulness, fearlessness and gentleness.

New from the Archives - A200: LEAVING HOME: Talks on Meditation and Life. The first young adult retreat at Gampo Abbey, August 1997. 9 Talks on 14 CDs $120.50 or 2 MP3 CDs $72.30.
(Each MP3 CD also available separately: #200a-MP3 CD of first 5 talks: $39.00. #200b-MP3 CD of last 4 talks: $33.30).
These talks by Gampo Acharya Pema Chödrön were given to youths (under 25 years old) at Gampo Abbey monastery in Nova Scotia in the summer of 1997. In this program, many young adults observed temporary precepts, wore monastic robes, shaved their heads, and crowded into the shrine room at Gampo Abbey to practice for one month under the guidance of Pema Chödrön and her fellow monastics. The first five talks introduce the view and practice of living Buddhism, starting with the basic spirit of practice, the view of buddha nature, and the importance of making friends with oneself. As well, precepts were introduced as awareness practice, with particular attention to the precept connected to non-harmful speech. The four thoughts that turn the mind towards dharma were also presented: precious human birth, impermanence, the inevitability of karma, and the relentlessness of confused cyclic existence, as well as the four noble truths. The last four talks introduce the theory and contemplation of the four limitless ones: limitless loving-kindness, compassion, joy, and equanimity, and include contemplative guided practices for love and compassion.
Talk 1: Making Friends with Oneself and Being Inquisitive. (1 CD $12.00)
Talk 2: The Four Reminders Part One: Appreciating Precious Human Birth and the Reality of Death. (1 CD $12.00)
Talk 3: The Four Reminders Part Two: The Inevitability of Karma and the Relentlessness of Samsara. (2 CDs $14.50)
Talk 4: Working With Precepts. (1 CD $12.00)
Talk 5: The Paradox of the Cessation of Suffering. (2 CDs $14.50)

A133: GUIDELINES FOR LIVING FEARLESSLY. Gampo Abbey, July 2008. 4 talks on 7 CDs $55.50 or
1 MP3 CD $30.00.

Pema Chödrön follows up on her Yarne teachings to the monastic community at Gampo Abbey with guidelines for working with shenpa, practicing patience, and cutting habitual patterns. This is an excellent exposition of how to practice fearless and gentle discipline based on trusting in one’s basic goodness.
Talk 1: Working with Shenpa. Working with shenpa through renunciation and refraining. The main thing is to work with our habitual patterns, to free ourselves from the tyranny of our own habits. This is a training you will work with until you die. It may be slow, but every time you try you will interrupt the habitual pattern. So trying is important. It’s a fearless engagement with the world. (2 CDs $14.50)
Talk 2: The Patience Practice of Simmering. You can burn up the latent seeds of habit just by practicing patience. Each time you do this, the habit is weakened. It taps into your inner strength. When you’re hooked and you can contact the feeling and stay with it and connect with it, it’s an opportunity to experience the most profound teachings. It’s a pathway of being open and receptive and how to really communicate from the heart with other people. It’s the doorway to enlightenment. (2 CDs $14.50)
Talk 3: Trusting Yourself. Friendliness to oneself is having confidence in your basic, natural intelligence. How does one develop confidence? It comes from knowing yourself really well and also with your relationships to other people. Meditation is the main tool for compassionate inquiry or self-reflection. Unconditional friendship with oneself means you don’t reject any part of yourself. It’s a deep, unshakable friendship. (1 CD $12.00)
Talk 4: Cutting The Ties That Bind You. Moods are like the weather, no feeling is final. The path to liberation depends on not taking everything personally. Where are your invisible ties? Refraining from possessing certain things gets at the grasping and fixation which binds us to this life. Each time we cut the ties, we are wearing out the mechanism of self-clinging. Find the place where the ties are strong and just acknowledge that and experience it. The approach is to simmer with the insecurity. (2 CDs $14.40)

A131: ALL IN THE SAME BOAT. Omega Institute, May 30-June 1 2008. Full set 10 CDs $70 or 1 MP3 CD $35 or 4 DVDs $100. Pema’s talks only: 7 CDs $55.50.
Developing unconditional friendship with ourselves, we learn to abide with our own energy and overcome fear of that which is unfamiliar. Doing so, we also see our “sameness” with others, that we are all in the same boat. Practicing this further, we develop the unconditional ability to stand in others’ shoes, not causing harm, and opening our hearts for others. Tim Olmsted, former director of Gampo Abbey, also gives excellent talks presenting the view of calm abiding meditation, the ground for these open-hearted teachings by Pema Chödrön. All talks may be purchased separately.
Talk 1: Trusting in Basic Goodness. Taking whatever arises as path. Wakefulness and sanity is permanent; neurosis is temporary. Our basic nature is like the clear blue sky. Get to know the clouds – habits, thoughts, emotions – really well, not rejecting our experience. Doing so, clouds become transparent. Whatever occurs, good or bad, is the perfect opportunity. Touch the fluid, dynamic energy of life. (2 CDs $14.50).
Talk 2: Humanizing Our World. Everything is an open pathway, the perfect opportunity to touch basic goodness. Refraining from labeling others. Unlimited friendliness to oneself is the basis for unlimited friendliness to others. A lasting friendship that doesn’t fall apart. (2 CDs $14.50).
Talk 3: Working with the “Siren Call” of Habit. Developing an appetite for the unfamiliar as a preparation for life as well as death. Training in courage and curiosity. Nelson Mandela’s Long Road Home, renouncing anger. Inspiring life examples. Fruition: abiding with the vibrancy of the world and kindness to others. (1 CD $12.00).
Talk 4: One World Family. Developing openness and receptivity, an unconditional friendship with oneself that includes seeing others as “just like me.” Caring for the earth and all beings on it. Compassionate abiding practice, as the basis for tonglen practice. Brief guided tonglen practice: courageous tonglen. Seeing pain as medicine, seeing one’s sameness with others. (2 CD $14.50).

A203: FINDING YOUR OWN VOICE: Women and the Wisdom Tradition of Buddhism. Pema Chödrön, Berkeley, CA, August 1991. In many schools of Buddhism, wisdom is personified as a woman, often in union with a male, who symbolizes compassion. Such wisdom melts solid opinions and eliminates boundaries that separate people. Wisdom opens up our experience of the world and brings the unconditional confidence of basic goodness. To contact such wisdom, it is necessary to overcome resentment. It is important for women and men to find their own voices in bringing Buddhism to the West -- this is happening. In order to do this further, it is necessary to work with fear, and to relate to the reality of death, which puts our life activities in perspective. 1 CD $12.00.
